Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Monte Alban, Oaxaca, ca. 600 CE. A rare Zapotec figural urn from the Valley of Oaxaca (Etla region) dating to Period III. Nicely sculpted in gray-brown terracotta clay and showing exceptional detail overall. This medium-sized pottery funerary urn is a depiction of 'Cocijo', the god of rain and lightning. He is shown here in typical fashion, seated with crossed legs and hands resting on the knees. Elaborately adorned with a large chest emblem, circular ear spools, wrist bands, shoulder pads, and decorated loin cloth. On his face he wears the distinctive 'buccal' nose/face mask, with a split (serpent-like) tongue protruding from the mouth. He is also wearing a tall headdress with side lappets, all carved with linear incising. Size: 6.5" W x 9" H (16.5 cm x 22.9 cm)
