Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Veracruz region / El Tajin, Totonac culture, ca 600 to 900 CE. A very fine and very rare pottery spouted jar from this little known culture of Mexico. Molded redware jar with exaggerated face of a god or deity wearing an avian maskette. The mask is comprised of a very long bird beak and large tripartite forehead ornamentation; flaring spout at rear with long neck and flared rim, applied red pigments throughout, much of which still remains. Size: 7" W x 8.25" H (17.8 cm x 21 cm)

Prior to the arrival of the Spanish, the Totonac lost control of their empire to the Aztecs who conquered them in 1480. As they became a part of the Aztec's confederation, the Totonac suffered greatly and made human sacrifices of their own to their gods for liberation.
