Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Oaxaca, Zapotec culture, Monte Alban IV, ca. 600 to 800 CE. A mold-formed pottery incensario in the form of a seated god, perhaps the god of maize Pitao Cozobi or even Cocijo, the god of rain and lightning. The seated deity presents with thick arms placed beside the hips, a portly abdomen beneath a frilled collar, and broad shoulders. The neck of the vessel displays an abstract visage boasting circular eyes, an upturned nose, bared teeth and tongue, and spool-adorned ears, all beneath furrowed incised brows. Traces of original red and black pigment are visible along the obverse, and faint ochre-yellow pigment can be seen on the verso. Size: 3.375" W x 4.4" H (8.6 cm x 11.2 cm).

Provenance: private southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s
