Description:

Pre-Columbian, Peru, Sican, ca. 800 to 1000 CE. A ceramic face carefully wrapped with silver sheet and highlighted with red cinnabar, depicting a visage of a deity or elite Sican lord. The visage is impressively decorated with characteristically elongated, slanted eyes and pronounced hoop-shaped ear ornaments. The Sican culture was named by the archaeologist Izumi Shimada, and according to Shimada "Sican" means "temple of the moon" - quite a poetic name for one of the most creative ancient Peruvian cultures.
