Description:

Pre-Columbian, Peru, North Coast, Lambayeque (Sican) culture, ca. 750 to 1350 CE. This is a beautiful piece! This is a large hammered flat bronze mask with inlaid shell eyes, long ears with flares, and a protruding nose with applied danglers. A mask like this would probably have been placed as a false face onto the mummy bundle of an important person -- wood, ceramic, and cloth were used for some people, but to have a bronze mask indicates a high status. Size: 10" W x 8" H (25.4 cm x 20.3 cm)

Provenance: Ex- New York Gallery, Ligbue Collection, Venice Italy. 1970s.
