Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A finely carved marble head of a male youth with a handsome visage comprised of generously lidded wide-open eyes with delineated pupils, soft arched brows, an aquiline nose, cup-shaped ears, closed bow-shaped lips, creases between his brows to indicate thought, and a slightly dimpled chin - all crowned by a curly coiffure. The sculptor of this piece was incredibly skilled with an impressive talent for bringing marble to life. Notice how he captured the dewy, suppleness of the youth's skin, the light in his eyes, and the soft waves of his hair. While on the one hand, the sculptor put forth an idealized attractive visage, the look in the sitter's eyes as well as the creases between his brows conjure a sense of verism and humanity. Size: 3.65" L x 3.5" W x 5.1" H (9.3 cm x 8.9 cm x 13 cm); height on stand: 8.2" (20.8 cm).
