Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. An intriguing fragment of a marble statue of Silenus, the loyal companion and tutor to Bacchus (Greek Dionysos) the god of wine, presenting with his skillfully carved flowing beard, naturalistically delineated torso and back with a wonderful recess to indicate his spine as well as a single hand reaching behind his back, perhaps to support the elderly, drunken Silenus. (Older than the other satyrs of the Dionysian entourage, Silenus is oftentimes referred to as Papposilenus.) What's more, though fragmentary, the sculpture still conveys Silenus' inebriated state with a severely leaning posture. Size: 14" H (35.6 cm); 15.5" H (39.4 cm) on included custom stand.
