Description:

Native American, North America, Hohokam, Sacaton Phase, ca. 900-1100 CE. The Hohokam of the Sacaton phase created marvelous painted decorations on their pottery. In this auction alone we see some fabulous examples of Sacaton red-on-buff examples - the miniature bowl adorned with flying birds, another featuring scorpions, yet another with basket carriers, a bowl with Kokopellis. The Hohokam produced gifted artists with magnificent handling of the brush! Just imagine what masterworks were created using this slate painter's palette! Remarkably it is not broken. Notice how the artisan who made it outlined the usable surface with fine incised lines. You are the 2nd person today to email about it. How silly that we didn't include the dimensions. It measures 5" x 3" x 1/8" thick.
