Description:

Native American, North America, northern Arizona, north of Flagstaff, ca. 1275-1400 CE. Jeddito Black-on-Yellow was among a long line of Hopi yellow wares made from clay that ranges from yellow to orange. This ladle was constructed via the coil-and-scrape technique, painted with manganese-based on bright red slip, and fired in an oxidizing atmosphere until it attained its yellow hue. An intricate painted decorative program comprised of varying geometric motifs and arranged in a pinwheel composition for the scoop of this ladle and the stepped motif of the handle make for a mesmerizing aesthetic. What's more, this ladle has an intentional spirit break inside the rim. Hopi oral history indicates that when groups were leaving a village, they would purposely break all of the pottery they could not take with them, leaving evidence of who once lived there. ~ 3-3/4"H x 8-1/2"D at widest point
