Description:

Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Pachacamac culture, ca. 1000 CE. A wonderful rectangular textile panel comprised of tightly-woven natural cotton fibers in hues of coffee and cream. Displayed on the textile panel are a pair of stylized coatimundi (or coati) in profile with slender fingers and toes on bent arms and legs, a wide chest with frilled fur along the spine, bushy tails, and elongated heads with enormous ovoid eyes and rounded snouts. The raccoon-like coatimundi was easily tamed in domestic contexts, and its humorous antics made it a popular pet among the ancients of the Americas. A modern textile panel beneath illustrates how each creature would have appeared if fully intact. Mounted atop a fabric-lined wooden frame. Size: 20.9" W x 7.875" H (53.1 cm x 20 cm).

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection; ex-private H.J. Westermann collection, Germany
