Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Pachacamac culture, ca. 1000 CE. A beautiful textile coca bag, comprised of tightly-woven camelid (alpaca or llama wool) fibers in hues of salmon, fuchsia, espresso, and golden-yellow, which has been opened at the seams to display its intricate imagery. Across the bag is a decorative program of abstract zoomorphic creatures with spindly legs, projecting ears flanking a pair of circular eyes, concentric triangular bodies, and curling tails lined with small spikes. A vivid example of high-quality weaving artistry from ancient Peru! Mounted on fabric-lined wooden frame. Size (textile): 15.75" W x 5.5" H (40 cm x 14 cm); size (frame): 19" W x 9" H (48.3 cm x 22.9 cm).
