Description:

Pre-Columbian, Colombia, Middle Cauca / Quimbaya culture, ca. 7th to 15th century CE. A seated pottery figure displaying a serene countenance with one hand before his chest, and the other raised with the fingers extended, as if holding an item or exalting or evoking the spirits. He presents characteristic Quimbaya features with a nude, rectangular, slab-like body, tubular limbs, and slit-form eyes, a straight mouth, and a projecting nose. Slab figures, like this example, were included with ceramic vessels and metal ornaments as offerings in burials in shaft and chamber tombs. They may have been considered guardians or companions for the deceased. Size: 12" L x 5.75" W x 15" H (30.5 cm x 14.6 cm x 38.1 cm)

  • Condition: Repaired and restored. Head, body, and limbs restored with new material and infill. Left arm reattached at shoulder and elbow with visible break lines. Stable pressure hairline fissures on the body. Nice preservation to form.
