Description:

Native American, southwest New Mexico, villages in southern Cibola Anasazi / northern Mogollon, Ancestral Puebloan (Anasazi) culture, ca. 1075 to 1250 CE. A fine ladle, hand-built from pottery which has been well-polished, covered with a pearly white slip, and decorated with black-painted linear and geometric motifs in the scoop basin as well as the front of the forked handle. A thin 'X' is painted beneath the scoop, and the handle displays dozens of small impressed holes. Size: 10.125" L x 4.7" W (25.7 cm x 11.9 cm).

Provenance: ex-Joan Shaw collection, bought in 1971; loaned to the Mesa Verde Museum, 1962-1970; ex-Bill Mitchell collection, Cortez, Colorado, USA, acquired from 1958 to 1962

  • Condition: Repair to one tip of forked handle, with small chips and light adhesive residue along break line. Minor abrasions to scoop, rim, base, and handle, with fading to original pigmentation, and light encrustations. Light earthen deposits and nice traces of original pigmentation throughout. Old inventory number written in black ink beneath scoop.
