Description:

Near East, Iran, Samanid Dynasty, Nishapur or Samarqand, ca. 10th to 12th century CE. A pretty pottery bowl with abstract green and brown motifs underneath a white glaze on the bowl's interior. The contrast between bright and darker green gives the impression of leaves. The exterior is unglazed, with limited areas of slip around the rim. Size: 7.5" W x 3" H (19 cm x 7.6 cm)

Samanid potters invented slip-painted ware, achieving a beautiful clarity of design; see, for example, the clear delineations between the different colors of green here. They used a white englobe (a thin slip wash) to cover red earthenware and then painted the decorations in bright pigments mixed with slip. Adding slip to the pigment prevented it from running.
