Near East, Byzantine Empire, ca. 10th century CE. An ornate cast bronze handle made for a chest with a symmetrical design. It has a thick, ridged handle that curves down from a central segmented area to meet two fittings that are of abstract vine and floral patterns. Each ends in a sharp spike. An example of the excellent bronze casting and the beauty of everyday objects in the Byzantine world! Comes with custom stand. Size: 8.8" L x 2.75" W x 3.5" H (22.4 cm x 7 cm x 8.9 cm); height on stand: 5.55" (14.1 cm)
