Description:

Near East, Iran, Samanid Dynasty, Nishapur or Samarqand, ca. 10th to 15th century CE. A steep-walled bowl with a pretty glazed interior. Green glaze rings the rim is drawn in thick lines towards the center of the bowl, dividing it into five quadrants. Incised abstract motifs create further decoration in the interior, and the piece has an interesting asymmetry. Samanid potters invented slip-painted ware, using a white englobe (a thin slip wash) to cover red earthenware and then adding slip to pigment (like the green here) to prevent it from running. Size: 6.6" W x 2.7" H (16.8 cm x 6.9 cm)
