Description:

Near East/Middle East, modern Iraq, Abbasid Dynasty, ca. 9th to 10th century CE. A pretty earthenware bowl with a white slip glaze over swirling and geometric sgraffito motifs that are accented by strong lines in copper-pigmented yellow and green slip. During the Abbasid period, the arrival along the Silk Road of Chinese porcelain inspired local artisans to create their own "white ware", covering buff earthenware vessels with glazes containing lead and tin to make them opaque when fired. They created their own distinctive style with fascinating iconography. Size: 9.75" W x 3.5" H (24.8 cm x 8.9 cm)
