Description:

Near East, Iran, Samanid Dynasty, Nishapur or Samarqand, ca. 10th to 12th century CE. A charming glazed pottery bowl with black, cream, and red interior motifs centered around a standing bird in tondo. The bird appears to be an eagle or some other bird of prey, with emphasized claws. Registers of red and black motifs over cream give the interior a bright, busy appearance. Birds were a hugely popular motif in pottery from this time and place, and the bird of prey motif may reflect a hunting theme. Size: 5" W x 1.7" H (12.7 cm x 4.3 cm)
