Pre-Columbian, Panama, Cocle, Macaracas, ca. 700 to 1200 CE. A magnificent pottery pedestal plate hand-painted with the mesmerizing image of a double-headed crocodile in hues of red, violet, and black atop a creamy beige ground. The serpentine body of the animal slithers across the shallow basin, adorned with dozens of pointed scales and elaborate geometric motifs, as each of its large saurian heads oppose one another. The tall pedestal foot has been perforated with 4 decorative arrow-shaped designs. Size: 11.9" Diameter x 5.1" H (30.2 cm x 13 cm)
