Pre-Columbian, Central America, Panama, Gran Cocle, Macaracas type, ca. 800 to 1000 CE. A beautiful pottery vessel depicting an abstract avian creature with folded wings, a thick tail, and a protruding head with a downturned beak. The cream-ground bowl features embellishments in red, black, and purple pigment while the composition rests atop an enormous, flared pedestal foot. Size: 7.875" L x 7" W x 8.7" H (20 cm x 17.8 cm x 22.1 cm)

Provenance: ex-private USA collection, acquired before 2000. Complete provenance will be provided to winning bidder; all items from this collection have been appraised by Marianne Huber in 2014

  • Condition: Vessel body reattached to top of pedestal stem, and restoration to small area of upper body, both with resurfacing and overpainting along new material and break lines. Abrasions and light fading to original pigment, otherwise in nice condition. Great preservation to overall avian form.
