Description:

Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Nazca, ca. 100 BCE to 400 CE. A superb hand-built pottery bowl that displays a register of stylized hummingbirds in profile! The vessel is of a stable and round bottomed form with a slightly flared rim and deep interior basin, all slip-painted a deep umber red hue. The exterior walls contain the delightful birds, all captured in flight, backswept wings and large heads outlined in black and detailed with solid hues of blue, red, orange, and white- with thin linear beaks. In the Pre-Columbian world birds had a special symbolic value as the indigenous believed they were sky animals that also served as messengers between humanity and their deities- and swift hummingbirds with their bright plumage and thirst for nectar, are especially captivating subjects! Size: 6" Diameter x 3.25" H (15.2 cm x 8.3 cm)
