Pre-Columbian, Central America, Costa Rica, ca. 500 to 1200 CE; El Salvador, Maya, Copador type, Late Classic Period, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A fine gathering of hand-built pottery vessels from El Salvador and Costa Rica. First is a handled jar with an abstract zoomorphic creature on the front brought forth by relief lines that comprise the face and eyes. Next is a twin-headed rattle vessel with petite pottery balls within the mouth of each creature. The largest is a minimalist vessel with an apple-shaped body bearing a pair of abstract creatures on the shoulder. Last is a Maya Copador vessel with a red rim, an orange body, and abstract linear and circular motifs surrounding the midsection. Size of largest: 9" W x 8.875" H (22.9 cm x 22.5 cm)

Provenance: private Lumberton, Texas, USA collection, acquired before 2010

  • Condition: Maya bowl and handled Costa Rican vessel repaired from multiple large pieces with losses and restoration to Maya bowl, and repair to side of one head on twin-headed vessel, all with resurfacing and overpainting along new materials and break lines; largest vessel is intact and very good. All pieces have abrasions and encrustations. Nice preservation to decorative motifs on most surfaces.
