Description:

Pre-Columbian, south coast of Peru, Nazca, ca. 220 BCE to 400 CE. A colorful and sizeable hand-built pottery bowl featuring 2 presentations of the "Anthropomorphic Mythical Being" on the exterior. The bowl rests on a rounded but stable base and the rim flares dramatically outward. The surface is slipped in a burnt umber hue then intricately painted with a whiskered feline-esque face and diamond-shaped eyes, under a dramatic headdress adorned with jewelry. He holds a staff in his clawed hands and his flowing cape and body are decorated with stylized trophy heads. All is done in hues of cream, orange, red, gray, umber, and outlined in black. While the Nazca did not leave written records explaining this mythical being, several appear to be associated with trophy heads or warfare and others with agricultural functions. This depiction of the enigmatic deity is a wonderful and bold example! Size: 6.65" Diameter x 4" H (16.9 cm x 10.2 cm)
