Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Moche, Phase IV, ca. 450 to 550 CE. A fascinating redware vessel in the featuring a canoe-shaped form toped by an ithyphallic monkey. Seated with a prominent erection, the simian hunches over slightly while holding one hand to head and feeding himself with the other. A curved stirrup spout and handle rises from his back, connecting to the base of the vessel. Monkeys were highly symbolic among the ancients of the Americas. The indigenous peoples were fascinated by the physical antics of these animals and viewed them as parodying human behavior. Size: 6.9" L x 4.3" W x 9.2" H (17.5 cm x 10.9 cm x 23.4 cm)
