Description:

Pre-Columbian, north coast of Peru, Moche V, ca. 600 to 800 CE. A classic Moche form, a stirrup vessel, with a long, thin, cylindrical spout and equally elongated and thin sides of the stirrup handle above a rounded, broad-shouldered body that sits on a flat base. The shoulder is painted in the fine line style with a motif of a shaman transforming into a bird repeated once on each side. The shaman is leaning forward on his legs as if running; he wears a long, feathered cape and a headdress in the form of a mythical animal, possibly a turtle. Cacti - representing the hallucinogenic drugs ritually ingested by the Moche - surround the figures. Size: 7.2" W x 11" H (18.3 cm x 27.9 cm)
