Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Moche V, ca. 600 to 800 CE. A mold-made brownware pottery drinking cup with a round but stable base, a tall body, a deep interior cavity, and a thick rim. The front of the vessel portrays a stylized, sculpted visage of a male comprised of ovoid eyes with pointed corners, a prominent nose, thin lips curved into a light frown, a pair of semi-circular ears which double as handles, and a smooth forehead beneath a simple coiffure which tapers to a point along the nape of the neck. The highly-burnished vessel is covered in dark-brown slip and gives it a wonderful presentation evocative of ancient Peru! Lucite display stand for photography purposes only. Size: 4.875" W x 3.875" H (12.4 cm x 9.8 cm).

Provenance: private southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s
