Description:

Pre-Columbian, northern Peru, Moche II, ca. 300 to 400 CE. A superb ceramic stirrup vessel - a type of early beer jar - in the form of a shaman in a transformational pose. He sits with arms folded over his bent knees, his body obscured by a broad tunic, his legs crossed below him. His face is fascinating - wizened, almost simian, with a jutting jaw and a mouth full of sharp teeth. The calmness of his facial expression belies the seriousness of his transformation, as if it is an everyday matter for him to gain monkey characteristics. Size: 4.9" W x 7.7" H (12.4 cm x 19.6 cm)

Provenance: private southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s
