Pre-Columbian, North Coast of Peru, Moche, phase 1, ca. 100 BCE to 100 CE. An extremely rare, hand-built pottery stirrup vessel used for dispensing libations during fertility rituals. The highly burnished canteen depicts a woman seated in the birthing pose, her arms bracing herself during labor, with her vagina acting as the pouring spout. The woman dons an incised red-and-yellow pectoral collar while fine facial features such as almond eyes, a prominent nose, full lips, and a pointed chin define her visage. Size: 8.125" L x 4.875" W x 6.625" H (20.6 cm x 12.4 cm x 16.8 cm)
