Description:

Pre-Columbian, Peru (North Coast), late Chavin to early Moche culture, Phase I, ca. 100 BCE to 100 CE. An awe-inspiring pottery stirrup vessel in the form of a shaman seated with knees propped up as he balances an olla on left shoulder. Turned slightly to his right, his captivating visage gazes hypnotically forward from wide eyes with bulging pupils - perhaps suggesting drug-induced dilation - above a pointed nose and full lips held slightly agape, also suggesting hallucinogenic influence. His fascinating, phytomorphic headdress sits just above his sizable ears, which are adorned with annular earspools, while a slender braid of hair falls down his curved back. His rotund body is mostly nude, wearing only a petite loin cloth and a pair of bracelets. Size: 6.6" L x 5.6" W x 8.3" H (16.8 cm x 14.2 cm x 21.1 cm)

Provenance: private Hawaii collection, acquired 2000 to 2010

  • Condition: Professionally repaired and restored with overpainting in some areas, but all very well done with indecipherable break lines. Expected nicks and abrasions to surface as shown, but otherwise, vessel has an impressive presentation and nice detail. Light earthen deposits in areas.
