Description:

North America, Great Lakes region, ca. mid-19th century CE. A hand-built wooden tobacco box lined with birch bark as well as dozens of decorative iron studs. The ovoid container has a removable, form-fitting lid with a slender leather handle strap situated in the middle, and the letters "A.B." are etched into the base. Though used for tobacco, petite containers like this example were also used to store fire-starting tools like flint and small amounts of tinder. Size: 4.375" W x 1.9" H (11.1 cm x 4.8 cm).
