Description:

North America, USA, ca. 19th century CE. A fine handmade wood and leather model of a canoe. The model evokes the hide canoes used by Native Americans in the upper Missouri River region during the period of trade and contact with Europeans and Americans. People also used canoes like this model to traverse between forts located on navigable rivers throughout the interior of the western USA. The model features a wooden frame and has two pieces of leather stitched together at the center forming the outside of the vessel. The wood creates a lattice-like structure on the interior, giving an idea of how people would have sat and stored trade goods. Size: 30.25" W x 4.5" H (76.8 cm x 11.4 cm)
