Description:

Western Europe, Germany, France, or England, ca. 12th to 14th century. A massive and terrifying iron sword of a type known as a longsword, two-handed, or bastard-type. It features a long, wide blade with a partial fuller, sharpened on one side with a slightly offset tip. The incredibly long grip, once covered in leather, wood, bone, or ivory, would have had a large, probably rounded pommel. The rounded, tapered guard is ringed, something not commonly found on swords of this period, and likely indicates this sword was designed for use on horseback. Size: 45.75" L x 11" W (116.2 cm x 27.9 cm)

Provenance: private London, UK collection; ex-private W.P. collection since the 1990s, acquired on the German art market
