Description:

Western Europe, possibly United Kingdom, Anglo-Saxon period, ca. 9th to 12th century CE. A rare iron helmet of simple domed form with a slight crest along the ridge-line. Once containing a separate iron band that went around the lower circumference via a series of iron rivets, this band held a leather inner lining to aid in comfort and safety. Due to the iron composition, most of these helmets did not survive, and few are seen outside of major museums. Size: 9" L x 7.75" W x 4" H (22.9 cm x 19.7 cm x 10.2 cm)

Provenance: private London, UK collection; ex-private W.P. collection since the 1990s, acquired on the German art market
