Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A fine gathering of 3 mold-formed pottery oil lamps, each with flat bases displaying an impressed planta pedis (maker's mark). The smallest lamp has a series of raised tongues around the shoulder and a tapering neck channel. The medium-sized lamp has volutes flanking the wick spout and a stylized canine in relief - perhaps a dog or wolf - within the recessed tondo. The largest lamp has a minimalist design with an incised ring around the fill hole and a pierced tab handle. Size of largest (minimalist): 3.2" W x 2.125" H (8.1 cm x 5.4 cm).

  • Condition: Wick spout of smallest lamp repaired from multiple pieces with losses and adhesive residue along break lines; medium-sized and largest lamps are intact. All lamps have minor abrasions and fading to original pigmentation. Light earthen deposits throughout. Old inventory labels beneath bases.
