Eastern Roman Empire, found in Turkey, on at Teos, 1st - 3rd century CE. Trio of ceramic oil lamps from the Ancient Romans. Perhaps the most interesting example is the black lamp which was found at Teos. Under the Roman Empire, Teos was a flourishing seaport known for its wine, the Temple of Dionysus, and its legendary theater. This lamp is adorned with a flower and volute motif on the shoulder. Measurements for the largest example. 4.00"L 2.88"H (10.16 L 7.30 H cm) Provenance: Ex-Private collection of William Dale, a career diplomat stationed in Turkey in the early 1960's, who acquired a vast collection of Greek, Roman and Near-Eastern treasures during his tenure.
