Description:

Ancient Rome, 1st - 3rd century CE. A Roman circular token or weight composed of translucent glass with a trail of opaque blue glass through half of the piece. One side is impressed with a profile image of the goddess Minerva, the Roman version of Athena - the goddess of wisdom, courage, inspiration, civilization, law and justice, strategic warfare, mathematics, strength, strategy, the arts, crafts, religion, and mythology. I wonder what her Mensa score would have been? Joining this piece is a fragment of a green glass pendant with iconography that is difficult to discern. Measurements for larger piece. 1.00"H (2.54 H cm) Provenance: Ex-Private collection of William Dale, a career diplomat stationed in Turkey in the early 1960's, who acquired a vast collection of Greek, Roman and Near-Eastern treasures during his tenure. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.

  • Condition: Pendant fragment as shown. Glass token is intact with minor surface wear. Excellent condition.
