Description:

Ancient Rome, ca. 1st century CE - 2nd century CE. Lovely pair of ancient Roman terracotta oil lamps. One features a representation of a boar facing left in profile on the concave discus that is set off by a raised ring. The other has a simpler design with a concave discus set off by a raised ring. Lamps such as this were filled with olive oil in ancient times and lit by means of a thick wick, which protruded from the nozzle end. The flickering light of the oil lamp was man's primary means of illuminating the darkness long before gas-lamps and modern electricity. 4.00"L 2.50"H (10.16 L 6.35 H cm) Provenance: Ex-Private collection of William Dale, a career diplomat stationed in Turkey in the early 1960's, who acquired a vast collection of Greek, Roman and Near-Eastern treasures during his tenure.
