Description:

Ancient Near East, Holy Land, ca. 4th to 6th century CE. A lovely set of three mold-formed terracotta oil lamps with slipper-form bodies and tab-shaped handles. An orange-slipped lamp has a raised crucifix within the neck channel. A larger lamp covered in red-orange slip has a stippled shoulder border and repeating chevrons within the neck channel. A red-slipped lamp boasts a fretted shoulder, a raised crucifix with a ringed top arm, and a stylized avian figure beneath. Lucite display stands for photography purposes only. Size of largest (stippled shoulder): 2.8" W x 1.75" H (7.1 cm x 4.4 cm).

Provenance: private Carlton collection, Los Angeles, California, USA, acquired between 1965 and 1980
