Description:

Ancient Near East, Holy Land, ca. 4th to 5th century CE. A fine set of two mold-formed terracotta oil lamps from the ancient Holy Land. First is a slipper-form lamp with a recessed foot bearing a low-relief crucifix, a fretted band around the shoulder, and a conical handle. Second is a discoid lamp with a flat base boasting several impressed dots, a central fill hole surrounded by impressed geometric motifs, and a petite wick spout. Size of largest (conical handle): 2.875" W x 1.75" H (7.3 cm x 4.4 cm).

Provenance: private Carlton collection, Los Angeles, California, USA, acquired between 1965 and 1980
