Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mayan territories, Mayan, ca. 550 CE - 800 CE and Proto-Mayan possibly Olmec, ca. 1000 BCE - 550 CE. This pair of stone celts includes a Mayan example, the larger piece, as well as a proto-Mayan possibly Olmec example. Axes of this size were typically used as ceremonial objects rather than actual weapons or tools. The effort involved in creating axes like these was quite time consuming. The polish and smooth surface on both examples is quite impressive and the cutting edge is still intact. Then there is the aesthetic of the stones that were selected to produce each axe, in the case of the Mayan, a lovely deep grey stone, the proto-Mayan/Olmec a striking green stone with attractive veining. 6 1/2"T and 5 3/4"T
