Late Roman to Byzantine Period, ca. 4th to 12th century CE. A striking, carefully constructed body chain, brooch chain, or necklace, formed of 83% silver flat cuff wire interlocked into loop-in-loop construction, forming a delicate strap that shifts and glitters as it moves. It terminates in three loops that hook together to form two individual strands from the single chain. In ancient times, it may have been worn between two brooches or across the chest like the body chain from the Hoxne Hoard (British Museum: 1994,0408.1); today it could easily be worn as a double-stranded necklace. Chains like this one were made to be worn by elite women, and were probably designed to have pendants hanging on them. A chain like this one may have been an heirloom or an item made for a wedding. Size: 50" L (127 cm); silver is 83%; total weight is 20.4 grams

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex-collection A. T., Munich, Germany, acquired 1985
