Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Veracruz culture, ca. 6th to 8th century CE. An impressive pottery incensario boasting the bust of a figure, likely a royal or deity, depicted heavily adorned with a corded necklace, a sizable pair of ear ornaments, and a headdress with projecting side flaps. Facing forward, his angular visage displays a heavy brow above generously-lidded eyes, a broad nose, fleshy lips, and a pointed chin. Two teeth are visible, indicating the remainder were filed down as a rite of passage. Rounded projections flare from each side, with a rounded bowl behind acting as the receptacle for burning copal. Remains of original red and blue/purple pigment throughout. A large and attractive vessel. Size: 11.5" W x 12.75" H (29.2 cm x 32.4 cm)

Provenance: private Owen collection, Sussex County, New Jersey, USA, acquired from Arte Primitivo, New York, USA in the early 1990s
