Description:

A large and impressive Pre-Columbian Colima dog figure from ancient West Mexico, circa 200 B.C. - 200 A.D. This hollow formed canine figure represents one of the most adored and sought after types of Pre-Columbian sculpture. The tail forms the spout of the hollow body of the dog, which is formed in typical fashion after the openings of the shaft and chamber tombs, which have so well preserved these wonderful forms of funerary art where they were placed as offerings. Dogs are believed to have significance in the beliefs of ancient West Mexican inhabitants, as guides into their version of the afterlife. This dog is likely portrayed as pregnant, rather than fat, thought to be representational of the ancient Escuincle breed of hairless Mexican dog. Measures approximately 12 3/4" long, by about 7 1/4" tall and 5 1/2" wide. Provenance: Former Indiana, USA collection. All items in this auction are legal to buy/sell under U.S. statute covering cultural patrimony per United States Code 2600, CHAPTER 14 -- CONVENTION ON CULTURAL PROPERTY, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.

  • Condition: In excellent condition, with minor restoration of chips on the spout. Otherwise, expected weathering, wear, loss, chips and abrasions overall, with pigment loss as visible. Mineral and sediment deposits remain inside and out.
