Pre-Columbian, southern Mexico, Guerrero region, Mezcala culture, ca. 500 to 200 BCE. A beautiful example of a hand-shaped amulet that is carved from mottled forest green stone with black and faint beige inclusions. The conical accessory has a tapered wrist with a bulging wrist bone denoting this as a right hand, and a quartet of string-cut grooves delineate each individual finger. A biconically drilled suspension hole behind the wrist enables this amulet to be worn on a necklace strand. Size: 1.8" W x 3.1" H (4.6 cm x 7.9 cm)

Provenance: ex-private collection of the late Father Bader, University of St. Thomas, Houston, Texas, USA; exhibited in the University of St. Thomas Art Gallery, acquired prior to 2000
