Pre-Columbian, southern Mexico, Guerrero region, Mezcala culture, ca. 500 to 200 BCE. A nice example of an abstract face pendant that is hand-carved from dark green-black stone. The minimalist countenance features string-cut grooves indicating the mouth, brows, eyes, and nasolabial folds, and a suspension hole is biconically drilled through the center of the verso up through the top. Size: 1.75" W x 1.875" H (4.4 cm x 4.8 cm)

Provenance: ex-private collection of the late Father Bader, University of St. Thomas, Houston, Texas, USA; exhibited in the University of St. Thomas Art Gallery, acquired prior to 2000
