Description:

Central Africa, Democratic Republic of Congo, Hemba people, ca. 19th to early-20th century CE. A nude male Singiti figure standing with hands resting on his abdomen, highlighting a protruding navel and genitalia. A thin, incised strap wraps beneath his chin, behind his ears, and across the top of his forehead, possibly representing a beard or part of his headdress. Traditionally kept in family shrines, Singiti figures served as focal points for ancestral rites, commemorating heroic deeds. This piece was part of the Educational Loan Collection at the Newark Art Museum, which allowed objects to be borrowed for educational purposes. Included is the storage box and checkout card documenting various dates the statue was borrowed. In 2014, the collection was deaccessioned from the Newark Museum of Art's holdings. Size: 7" L x 7" W x 25.5" H (17.8 cm x 17.8 cm x 64.8 cm)

    Condition:
  • Chips and abrasions, and minor losses to surface layers on the rear of the base. Stable pressure fissure on the posterior and base. Comes in the original museum cardboard storage box, with museum's index card attached to the interior of the lid. The base is mounted on a square piece of fiberboard with screws. Old inventory number on the top of base. Nice patina throughout.
