Description:

Central Africa, Cameroon, Grasslands Kingdoms, Bamilike, Bamum, or Bamenda Tikar, ca. early 20th century CE. This large helmet mask, carved from a single piece of wood, portrays an exaggerated male face with distinct features: a parted mouth with defined teeth, flaring nostrils, notched eyebrows, bulging rimmed eyes, and projecting ears. The wide forehead is etched and divided by parallel grooves, the coiffure is split into two large bundles of conical hair locks, with remnants of white pigment adding depth throughout. In the stratified Grassfields Kingdoms of Cameroon, masks signify privilege and prestige, overseen by "Kwifoyn," a regulatory society. This mask belongs to a lineage group and represents an elite man, embodying the spirit of a royal or clan ancestor. It is traditionally used in funeral or memorial ceremonies to honor the deceased. Positioned atop the head, the mask is paired with a mesh veil that conceals the wearer's identity. Size: 10" L x 10" W x 16" H (25.4 cm x 25.4 cm x 40.6 cm); 22" H (55.9 cm) on included custom stand.
