Description:

Native American, Northwestern United States, Alaska, Aleut culture, ca. early 20th century CE. A large twined gathering and storage basket crafted from beach rye grass, featuring remnants of brightly dyed wool yarn and a braided handle rim. The yarn, dyed in vivid colors, was used for false embroidery over the woven grass, creating decorative elements such as simple, repeating floral or geometric shapes that stood out against the natural tones of the grass. The braided rim forms loops designed to accommodate a cord for cinching the basket closed. The grass and twining technique result in a remarkably supple and flexible weave. Size: 14" Diameter x 9.75" H (35.6 cm x 24.8 cm)
