Description:

First Nations / Native American, Northwestern United States & Western Canada, Washington & British Columbia, Nlaka'pamux (Thompson River Salish), ca. 1910s CE. An antique hand-coiled lidded basket crafted from cedar root foundations with cedar root splints, reed grass, perhaps corn husk, and both dyed and un-dyed cherry bark. The weaving technique employed creates motifs visible only on the exterior. Leather cord hinges and handles give the basket a resemblance to a picnic basket. Sale items often included such features to mimic European-style vessels. Traditionally, Salish women gathered and softened red cedar roots for weaving or coiling baskets, incorporating cherry bark and grasses to create contrasting geometric patterns, as seen here. These baskets were vital in Salish trade networks and daily life. Following the mid-19th century, as colonialism disrupted traditional Indigenous ways of life, basket sales became a crucial source of income. Size: 14" L x 7" W x 7.5" H (35.6 cm x 17.8 cm x 19 cm)
