Description:

Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, late Calima to La Tolita, ca. 500 BCE to 200 CE. A sizable pottery vessel depicting a stylized zoomorphic creature, perhaps a large feline like a jaguar or more likely a bear. The creature sits atop a circular base and showcases its clawed paws by extending all 4 limbs out in front of its plump body. The head peers forward with bulging eyes that flank a slender snout, and a pair of semicircular ears protrude from the top of the head. Size: 11.5" L x 9" W x 13.5" H (29.2 cm x 22.9 cm x 34.3 cm)

Provenance: Estate of Peter H. Tillou Collection, thence by descent. Acquired in the 1990s, collection # 054. Appraised for $6,200 by Marianne Huber in 2014.
